News

Hard Rock Guitar God (and SF Bay Area native) Ronnie Montrose has passed away at age 64. He's best-known for his string of albums with the group Montrose (and later Gamma), but he had earlier made a name for himself with stints backing Van Morrison, Stevie Wonder, and The Beau Brummels. He's still heard regularly on Classic Rock radio, laying down lead guitar on staples by Edgar Winter and Gary Wright, and you can revisit these musical highlights in the tribute playlist Ronnie Montrose. There's a whole string of artist tribute playlists, most recently with music from Etta James and Johnny Otis, two R&B pioneers. Life is short, but the music lives on at Blue Beat!

Bluebeat is a great place to catch up on the latest Pop, but we also like to dig deep into the archives to uncover those missing links in music history. With two new recent playlists, you can explore the unheard beginnings of Rock, plus get a taste of Alternative Rock from Japan. When Country artists picked up on the fading fad of Boogie, they gave it that Country twang, and along the way helped start Rock n' Roll. Hear it all in the playlist Hillbilly Boogie!. Rock has spread all over the world, but Japan especially has been a hotbed of Alternative and Experimental Rock. Some of the top groups are featured in Japan Rocks!. Tune in, the music of the world is at your fingertips with BlueBeat!

Recent Picks 07/28/11

It's time once again to check in with BlueBeat Fresh, a quick overview of some of our favorite recent albums. First up, Tinie Tempah, one of the top MCs to come out of the UK Grime scene, and his new CD Disc-Overy, which is seeing a little chart action on this side of the pond. If you're a fan of Roots Rock or Modern Electric Blues, you'll want to listen to Revelator from supergroup Tedeschi Trucks Band. Jazz-influenced vocalist Madeleine Peyroux is back with Standing On The Rooftop, and we would be remiss without a mention of 'Weird Al' Yankovic's new Alpocalypse. Of course you'll recognize the current pop songs he's inspired by, but his re-workings of the lyrics are comedy gold. If he's one of the Four Horsemen, maybe it wouldn't be so bad.

What's Freak Folk? You've probably already been listening to it for a while now: it's a catch-all term for the current generation of folk songwriters like Animal Collective, Devendra Banhart, and Joanna Newsom. Acoustic folk is the jumping-off point, with psychedelic and avant-garde influences. Your tour guide today is BlueBeat user celestial1 with her playlist called (naturally) Freak Folk. If you're ready for more, try her 100 Greatest Indie Rock Albums, a compendium of the biggest albums in Indie like XO by Elliott Smith and Slanted And Enchanted: Luxe And Reduxe by Pavement. Thanks, Celestial!
