There's a new crate with Drum & Bass and other electronica selections by thelocust2439 in the ninth gate. Goldie, Photek, a little DJ Krush...it works for me. And the lighter side of rock is heard in a mellow crate called Jst's Fri Nite Light, by, you guessed it - BlueBeat user jst. Check 'em out, or create your own!

Jazz drummer Max Roach has passed. One of the pioneers of Bebop, he played on a number of classic recordings with Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and many others, including acts in other jazz styles, such as Duke Ellington and Louis Jordan. His greatest contribution was from this era, making the drummer an integral part along with the other instruments. Rather than just keeping a steady swing beat, he introduced a whole new of vocabulary to jazz drumming, one with complex simultaneous rhythms and great subtlety. He is also remembered for his constant exploration into new musical areas, and his commitment to political causes.

Nylon & Nails 08/13/07

BlueBeat's erichbenjaminbach has put together a further installment of the greatest recordings by Classical guitarists, called Nylon & Nails. With music composed by Bach, Vivaldi, and many others, as performed by musicians such as Julian Bream and Eliot Fisk, it ranks among a small group of DJ Crates that focus on Classical. So if you're already a fan of the music, or maybe you've just spent enough time listening to head-banging heavy metal, this crate is worth a listen!

Our new Classical playlist, Classical Guitar, is a showcase for the greatest performers of the genre. Andrés Segovia, Christopher Parkening and others fill out this channel with examples of their playing. Give it a listen - it's already climbed to #3 in popularity with our users. If that leaves you wanting for more, head over to the Be The DJ Page for the user crate Nylon and Nails by erichbenjaminbach.

Word has just reached me recommending some BlueBeat user DJ Crates that cover a grab bag of different tunes. LALALA graces us with some great Indie Rock from Damien Rice, Wilco, the new previously-unreleased Elliot Smith CD New Moon, plus some classic Smiths in the DJ Crate AW SHUX (there's even "Speeding Motorcycle" from Yo La Tengo). SEVEN 0 SEVEN from user GTS gives us a ...(read more)

BlueBeat aims to be a place where you can get a good overview of just about any kind of music we that can get our hands on. It's no secret that in recent years, CD sales have been hurting, and listeners have been abandoning terrestrial radio in droves. The Internet has allowed people to explore new types of music they couldn't find through the major media outlets. In the real world, there are different kinds of music enjoyed by all kinds of people, and I like to think that's reflected ...(read more)

This week's roundup of recent additions starts off with the latest from Rancid's Tim Armstrong, A Poet's Life. His punk roots go back to the East Bay's Operation Ivy, and this album features the backing of L.A.'s The Aggrolites, who are bringing the Jamaican sound back to Punk/Ska (check out their latest, Reggae Hit L.A.). A couple of women in Indie Rock have new releases: Feist is a Canadian known for her collaborations with Broken Social Scene; and ...(read more)

Eel River Blues continues to be one of our most popular DJ Crates. BlueBeat user keturah has put together a selection of Blues from Jimmy Reed to Koko Taylor to Robert Cray. Bowie Influence is an overview of David Bowie and some friends (created by cvering); and cacraft takes us back to the roots with This Land Is Your Land (#4 at the moment), featuring Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams (Sr.), Johnny Cash and Hank Snow. Also, here's a tip for when you're making a crate: I've noticed that the DJ Crates that become popular tend to have a quick description (which artists, style of music), which helps folks decide whether they want to try it. Let 'em know what's in there, and more people will listen to your channel.

More custom-made DJ crates from BlueBeat users: lostinspace presents the family tree of Yes in The Symptoms Of Yes, with all kinds of great prog rock; and way over on the other end of the spectrum, from inkbelcher comes something for the whole family in Silly, Fun And Soundtracks. You'll hear great children's music artists like Raffi and Trout Fishing In America mixing it up with soundtracks from some popular kids' ...(read more)
