Our CEO, Hank Risan, musician and owner of one of the world's finest guitar collections (many of which can be viewed at The MoMI), has inspired and shaped the cool and refined BlueBeat Café and keeps daily tabs on this favorite Killer Playlist. Indeed, it's become one of our most popular playlists, and for good reason. It's our own secret blend of some of the best music around, old and new: lounge back in your sofa and we'll cast the reflective mood, perfect for inspiring your ...(read more)

The world of electronic music lost one of its most intrepid explorers last Sunday, August 21st. Inventor and developer of the Minimoog, Robert Moog's influence on popular music has been astoundingly widespread. Electronic music found its roots in the first half of the 20th century, flourishing only at the fringe edges of modern classical music (for a listen, check out Electronic Rogues). Synthesizers produced by Moog during the mid-60s were bulky, unwieldy instruments mostly owned by academic institutions, largely ...(read more)

Next up in the new channel arena: Quiet Storm, a selection of Smooth Jazz (which has been a big request in recent weeks). You'll hear newcomers like Mindi Abair and Brian Culbertson alongside standard-bearers Spyro Gyra and The Rippingtons. Also there are the artists that pioneered the sound, like George Benson and Grover Washington, Jr.

Here at BlueBeat we like to stay on top of all the music news, whether monumental or, well, silly. This just in: Rap mogul Sean "P. Diddy" Combs is changing his name ...(read more)

Historic NYC Punk Rock venue CBGB's is in danger of losing its lease and closing forever. Little Steven Van Zandt (of Bruce Springsteen's E-Street Band) has organized a series of benefit concerts to save the club, featuring artists from the heyday of punk, as well as newer, more mainstream groups. Scheduled bands playing the benefit series this month are playing here, too, in our new Killer Playlist, CBGB's Not Dead. Listen to older bands like Sham 69 and The Dead Boys, keepin' it alive in the Original Punk Rock TM. Other bands participating are pop-punkers The Offspring, Chevelle, and the people who created Punk rock history there: Lou Reed, Talking Heads, Television, and more.

Late last year we started a new type of channel here at BlueBeat, devoted to musicians so legendary, they deserve their own playlists. It began with the two Bobs: December brought Dylan Undercover, in tribute to Bob Dylan, and in February we unveiled Marley Immortal, commemorating what would have been the reggae great's 60th birthday. This month, in recognition of Jerry Garcia (8/1/42 - 8/9/95), we present Jerry's Psychedelic Circus, with The Grateful Dead and some of the guitarist's famous collaborations with others like mandolinist David Grisman.

You may have wondered, as we often have: "How on Earth does BlueBeat play the highest-quality audio on the internet, yet stay completely free?" (If not, you're welcome to ask that very question right now.)

The answer is, not easily. For every song played, we must, of course, pay the appropriate record labels and artists their monetary dues. And not only do we operate and maintain the best-sounding music ...(read more)

This month we feature a smattering of selections, sprinkled fresh atop our most popular playlists...voted by all of you, of course!

Looks like the Top Country Hits Killer Playlist is ranked #3, and it's getting bigger yet. The latest addition is Willie Nelson's (sort of) new CD, Countryman. Started in 1995 and recently dusted off and polished, it's a soulful blend of country and reggae, with top musicians ...(read more)

Everybody (especially you, Philip) do the hustle! Hip-Hop and R&B fans, on the other hand, will want to check out some of our recent additions. There's the sexy grooves of R.
