Description:
Whereas most of the gospel music of previous decades was strongly rooted in tradition, by the early '70s several artists emerged with a sound inspired by Edwin Hawkins’ “Oh Happy Day”, which appealed to contemporary audiences. The debut album by Andrae Crouch and the Disciples formed a template for the pop-influenced contemporary sound that became the new voice of gospel music during the '80s and '90s.
