Description

As an increasing number of hip-hop artists topped the charts in the early 1990s, the biggest rappers became pop stars. Performers like MC Hammer and Puff Daddy scored big crossover hits by sampling well-known pop songs, while artists like the Notorious B.I.G., Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur enjoyed mainstream success while maintaining their gangsta rap credibility. Outkast and Missy Elliott broadened hip-hop's horizons by combining elements of r&b, funk and electronic dance music styles like drum 'n' bass to carry the genre into the new millennium. Today's biggest mainstream hip-hop artists like 50 Cent and Eminem have topped the charts without abandoning their hardcore roots or toning down their controversial lyrics.
