Outkast and Missy Elliott broadened hip-hop's horizons by combining elements of r&b, funk and electronic dance music styles like drum 'n' bass to carry the genre into the new millennium. Today's biggest mainstream hip-hop artists like 50 Cent and Eminem have topped the charts without abandoning their hardcore roots or toning down their controversial lyrics.
