Description
African-American spiritual music and soulful work songs were primary influences for blues music in the 1920s and '30s. Musicians developed this new style by embellishing the simple three-chord progressions that formed the foundation of most blues songs with melodic vocal or instrumental improvisations. Though many white musicians played a folk-derived version of the blues, the majority of blues performers were male African-Americans. Several distinct styles of blues developed during this time: country blues (Mississippi Delta, Texas and Piedmont blues), boogie-woogie piano blues and piano-guitar duo blues. Key artists from this era include Blind Lemon Jefferson, Blind Blake, Reverend Gary Davis, Charley Patton, Robert Johnson and Tampa Red.
