Description
Country music reached a new peak of popularity in the 1990s when artists like Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson and Clint Black mixed the honky tonk-and-rock New Traditionalist sound with modern pop production and sold millions of albums. Superstars like Shania Twain, who sold over 18 million copies of her album Come on Over, and Faith Hill became enormous crossover successes, but some purists argued that their sound was more pop than country. Even the Dixie Chicks, who blended traditional country, bluegrass and pop, enjoyed multi-Platinum sales. Country music became America's most popular radio format in the 1990s, and stars like Tim McGraw, George Strait, Hank Williams Jr. and Dwight Yoakam dominated the airwaves.
