Description

Disillusioned with the pop-rock, new wave and classic rock cluttering the airwaves during the early 1980s, hipsters and trendsetters tuned into college radio stations, which supported post-punk bands like U2, the Cure, REM, the Smiths, Violent Femmes and Siouxsie and the Banshees long before they became staples of mainstream modern rock radio. Bands like the Pixies and Sonic Youth who never achieved pop success developed devoted cult followings mostly thanks to exposure on college radio.
