Description
As the US started becoming an industrial leader in the 1920s, society cast aside traditional values such as frugality and hard work and embraced the ideals of luxury and leisure. Young women and men defiantly expressed their sexuality through exotic dances like the tango, foxtrot and Charleston, and hip, fashionable young women, called flappers, favored the lively, seductive sounds of an emerging style of music known as jazz (although more conservative elements of society referred to it as the devil's music). This decade, known as the Jazz Age, was the first period in American history where youth culture dominated. However, jazz was not the only popular style of music during this time - blues, country and pop crooners also enjoyed immense success during the Roaring '20s.
