Description
Whereas most of the singer-songwriters of the 1960s emerged from the folk music scene, performers in the 1970s drew inspiration from various styles of music such as rock and jazz. Instead of performing solo with only the accompaniment of a piano or guitar, many singer-songwriters like Elton John and Todd Rundgren performed backed by full bands. Artists like Cat Stevens, Harry Chapin and James Taylor topped the charts in the early '70s, and by the late '70s several impressive songwriters like Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe emerged from England's punk and new wave scene.
