Albums in Surf Music

Description

The coastal cities of Southern California where hot rods, surfing and beautiful girls in bikinis were all the rage became the hotbed of teen culture in the early 1960s. Influenced by Link Wray's simple, energetic guitar instrumentals, young teens there picked up guitars, formed bands and recorded regional hits. Dick Dale plugged a portable reverb unit into his amp and cranked it up as far as possible to create a "wet" sound that quickly became associated with the thrills and spills of surfing. Numerous bands like the Bel-Airs, Surfaris and Chantays imitated this sound and scored hits of their own. Bands like the Beach Boys and Jan and Dean popularized a vocal style of surf music that will always be associated with sun, surf and sexy swimsuits.
