Albums in Synth-Pop
Description
As the technology increased and the price of electronic musical instruments plummeted in the early 1980s, many musicians opted for synthesizers instead of guitars. Dozens of new British acts like Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Soft Cell, Depeche Mode and the Human League crafted a new form of pop driven by danceable drum machine rhythms and slick synth lines. While some artists like Gary Numan depicted a bleak, Orwellian sci-fi future, most synth pop acts like ABC, Duran Duran and Howard Jones focused on the timeless topics of love and romance. Although synth pop emerged from Britain's punk and new wave scenes, artists like Eurythmics, Level 42 and Thomas Dolby contributed healthy doses of sophistication and a more danceable sound to the genre.
