The success of early rap performers like the Sugarhill Gang, Kurtis Blow, Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash paved the way for the phenomenal mainstream success of hip-hop artists like Run DMC, LL Cool J and the Beastie Boys in the mid 1980s. Run DMC achieved several early hip-hop milestones, becoming the first hip-hop act to sell Gold, Platinum and Double-Platinum albums and score a Top Ten hit. The success of Salt-N-Pepa, hip-hop's first popular all-female act, opened new avenues for women hip-hop artists. By the late '80s hip-hop had splintered into several significant factions, led by Public Enemy's political rap, NWA's gangsta rap and De La Soul's alternative rap. All of these groups enjoyed phenomenal record sales, establishing hip-hop as one of today's leading genres of mainstream popular music.
