Albums in Symphonic Imagery

Description

Many Romantic Era composers were influenced by literature that celebrated nature and ideals such as romantic love and individualism, and they began writing works that were essentially musical pieces of literature. Debussy, Grieg, Liszt, Sibelius and Wagner are just a few of the composers who wrote orchestral pieces designed to tell a story or depict an event, which became known as symphonic poems or tone poems. In addition to playing melodies and harmonies, the instruments in the orchestra expressed a wide variety of moods and imitated sound effects such as thunder, cannon fire or birds and animals. During the late 1800s, Richard Strauss wrote numerous tone poems based on dramatic or literary works like "Don Juan," "Macbeth" and "Don Quixote," and his most famous tone poem, "Also Sprach Zarathustra," was based on the work of philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche.
