Description

Acoustic guitarist Will Ackerman started the Windham Hill label in the 1970s, but the label came to international prominence during the early ‘80s when Ackerman signed artists like pianist George Winston and guitarist Michael Hedges to the label. While Windham Hill has released jazz and world music albums, it gained notoriety for being one of the leading proponents of the instrumental style of music known as new age, mainly due to the success of albums by artists like Winston and Ray Lynch. The new age tag no longer applies to many of the albums put out by the label, which range from the exploratory jazz of the Turtle Island String Quartet to the romantic pop melodies of Jim Brickman.
