By the mid '90s, metal music had successfully shed its former "hair band" trappings and blazed back to glory with a sound that was more aggressive and gritty than ever. Early '90s alternative metal bands like Helmet, Tool, Ministry and White Zombie delivered industrial-strength music that was brainy, moody and spooky while sounding heavier and more ominous than anything that had come before. Korn combined the sounds of rap and metal with experimental dissonance and cathartic screams, influencing dozens of sound-alike bands to follow their lead. Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock released hugely successful rap-metal records, but Metallica, whose sound took a turn towards alternative rock in the late '90s, remained the most popular metal band of all.
