Description
Modern jazz was born in the 1940s when musicians began to rebel against the restrictions of playing big band music and developed a virtuosic style of playing characterized by complex melodic lines, sophisticated improvisations and complicated chord arrangements and rhythms. This new style, called bebop, flourished at the capable hands of players like Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk and Charlie Parker. In the early 1950s, a variation of bebop called hard bop emerged when players like Art Blakey and Horace Silver incorporated blues and gospel influences and focused on playing simpler, recognizable melodies with funkier rhythms.
