Description
Around the mid 1700s, composers started moving away from the intricate textures of Baroque music and developed musical compositions with an emphasis on clear, prominent melodies and dynamics influenced by the aesthetics of Greek Classical art and philosophy. The sonata form, where a single movement is divided into separate sections that establish, develop and recapitulate a musical theme, originated during this era and was employed in sonatas, string quartets and symphonies. Viennese composers Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart greatly expanded the symphony's complexity and innovation, creating works that displayed considerable intellect and varied emotions. While most Classical Era composers were employed by aristocracy and noblemen, by the end of this period composers like Beethoven were public figures who created music for general audiences.
