In the mid '80s, numerous fusion jazz artists and bands like Larry Carlton and the Yellowjackets toned down the harsher rock elements of fusion in favor of laid-back, uncomplicated r&b rhythms and performances that emphasized melody over extended improvisations. Easy-listening, adult contemporary and new age radio embraced the sweet melodies of saxophonists Kenny G, Dave Koz and Grover Washington Jr. and the polished playing of groups like Acoustic Alchemy and the Rippingtons, creating a new radio format that was dubbed "smooth jazz." Artists like guitarist Lee Ritenour and saxophonists David Sanborn and Najee remain key proponents of this popular, predominantly instrumental style of music.
