Albums in The Post-Modern Era

BBC National Orchestra Of Wales, Mark Wigglesworth

Description

During the post-modern era, which lasted from the 1960s through the 1980s, classical composers continued to embrace avant-garde ideals and challenge conventional notions of music. Iannis Xenakis employed computers and mathematics to develop highly complex works, while George Crumb explored unusual instrumental combinations and unorthodox vocal techniques. Poland became an important focal point of avant-garde music as Krystof Penderecki and Henryk Gorecki established new orchestration techniques in works like Penderecki's "Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima" written for 52 string instruments. Gavin Bryars, Gyorgy Ligeti, Dmitri Shostakovich and Laurie Spiegel are just a few of the influential composers who wrote notable, adventurous works during this exciting period of musical development.
