Description
France was the leading proponent of ballet during the early Romantic Era, and the works of French composer Leo Delibes, who wrote the ballets "Sylvia" and "Coppelia," were a considerable influence on subsequent ballet music composers. During the late Romantic Era, ballet achieved new levels of popularity when Russian composers Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Alexander Konstantinovich Glazunov composed ballets commissioned by the Russian Czar's Imperial Ballet performing company. Previously, ballet was closely associated with opera, but during this time it began to develop as a distinct art form. Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake," "Sleeping Beauty" and "The Nutcracker" remain three of the most popular ballets of all time.
