Description
The music of the Romantic Era (1825-1900) reflected significant social changes that were taking place in Europe, such as revolutions against ruling monarchies, the embracing of democratic principles and the growth of nationalism and individualism. No longer servants of royal courts, composers made their livings by writing music for general audiences that was performed in public concert halls or sold as sheet music to growing numbers of middle class families who owned pianos and were musically educated. Beethoven wrote fiercely independent, lavishly emotional works that received considerable acclaim from the public and made him a hero of the common man. The Romantic Era's emphasis on emotion is brilliantly exemplified by the powerful, moving works of composers like Brahms, Mendelssohn, Ravel, Schubert, Strauss and Tchaikovsky.
