The world changed quickly during the 1960s and pop music changed along with it. The innocent sounds of teen idols and surf music were all the rage in the early '60s but these styles were quickly relegated to obscurity when the Beatles stormed America's pop charts in 1964 with a more raucous sound. The Beatles' unorthodox studio experiments in the '60s influenced an explosive period of musical creativity as psychedelic and acid rockers searched for strange, new sounds. The Beach Boys abandoned their surf-oriented sound and created lavish productions with heady layers of symphonic instruments and sound effects. Artists like Harry Nilsson, the Mamas and the Papas and the Turtles challenged pop convention with bold, inventive productions while still managing to churn out pop hits.
