Albums in Alternative Country

Description

During the early '90s, bands like Uncle Tupelo (which later became Wilco) and the Bottle Rockets started fusing the sounds and lyrical style of classic country music with the energy of rock. Possessing a similar independent spirit to alternative rock groups that were gaining popularity during this time, these alternative country acts defied the formulas of commercial country by paying tribute to long-gone ideals of country music while blazing a bold new future for the genre. Alternative country encompasses everything from the pop-edged retro stylings of the Mavericks, to the bittersweet songwriting of Fred Eaglesmith, to the blazing country "shred" guitars of the Hellecasters.
