Description
Throughout early American history, the singing and rhythmic styles of African slaves blended with the melodies and lyrical traditions of European immigrants to form new styles of music that became the foundations of American folk, gospel, blues, Cajun and country music. Around the turn of the 20th century, individuals began using new recording technology to capture the sounds of rural America. By the late 1920s, recordings by seminal country music artists like The Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers sold millions of copies. Radio brought these new sounds to millions of households across the nation, leading to the development of diverse, new musical styles.
