Description

Delta blues originated from the field hollers and work songs of slaves in the Mississippi River delta. During the emancipation years of the late 19th century, poor traveling musicians kept this vocal tradition alive by performing at house parties and in juke joints in the rural South where the music became associated with sinful acts and disrespectful living. Many of these juke joint drifters accompanied their plaintive singing with melodies played on an acoustic guitar with a bottleneck slide. Some of the earliest recorded Delta blues musicians such as Charley Patton, Son House and Robert Johnson were ferocious virtuosos who could play rhythms, melodies and bass lines simultaneously on their guitars. Other important Delta blues musicians include Muddy Waters, Tommy Johnson and Skip James.
