Albums in Dixieland
Description
Dixieland jazz started as a vibrant style of instrumental brass band music where several lead instruments, such as a clarinet, cornet, saxophone, trombone and trumpet, ornamented a main melody with improvised, contrapuntal melodies to "jazz up" the music. Dixieland Jazz originated in New Orleans in the late 1800s and worked its way up the Mississippi River to Chicago, where groups like the Original Dixieland Jazz Band made the first Dixieland jazz recordings in 1917. Because New Orleans had no recording studios at this time, the Chicago style of Dixieland jazz, which emphasized instrumental solos - even from the banjo, drums and tuba in the rhythm section - and intricate arrangements, became better known. Some of Dixieland's most famous soloists include Louis Armstrong (trumpet), Eddie Condon (banjo), Gene Krupa (drums) and Joe Venuti (violin).
