After the late 1950s, music fans seeking an alternative to the sugary sweet sounds of pop music and the intellectually challenging nature of jazz discovered the work of folk artists like the Kingston Trio and Peter, Paul and Mary. Folk music thrived on college campuses during this period of increased social consciousness, fueled by a desire to return to simpler, more honest times. Many artists explored the work of previous folk and blues musicians, but an increasing number began to write their own original folk songs. Folk music was traditionally performed on acoustic instruments, but Bob Dylan's controversial performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival boldly inducted electric instruments into the genre, paving the way for electric folk rock bands like the Byrds and Buffalo Springfield.
