Description
The popularity of the Beatles and British invasion bands influenced many young musicians to form their own bands and churn out original tunes in anonymity in garages across the U.S. Hoping to discover the next Beatles, record labels signed dozens of these bands during the mid 1960s. While their musicianship and singing was often primitive, these bands possessed unbridled creativity and infectious energy. Bands like the Kingsmen and Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs performed simple, three-chord R&B-influenced dance tunes, while the Count Five and the Chocolate Watchband explored more experimental, psychedelic-influenced sounds. The raw, gritty sound of garage rock is considered a precursor to punk rock.
