Description
Although Goth was initially an offshoot of punk, the music's atmospheric textures, off-kilter rhythms and morbid, personal lyrics bore little resemblance to early punk. Singles released in 1979 by Bauhaus, Joy Division and the Cure established a template for the Goth sound, and dozens of bands imitated the mournful vocals and moody melodies of these seminal artists. England's 4AD label introduced several Goth-inspired acts like the Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance, who created a more ethereal, ambient style of music. In the mid 1980s, the Sisters of Mercy married the sounds of distorted, metal guitars with danceable drum machine rhythms, leading Goth music in a more industrial direction.
