Description

"Hillbilly" was a mostly derogatory term used around the turn of the 20th Century to refer to people who lived in the hills or backwoods of Southeastern America. The term didn't apply to music until 1925, when Ralph Peer of Okeh Records decided to name a string band he was working with The Hill Billies to make their image more interesting. The Hill Billies performed a style of music that was previously known as "old time music," "mountain ballads" or "hill country music", and was segregated and marketed separately from traditional African American blues and gospel styles known at that time as "race music." Performed primarily by string bands featuring a fiddle player accompanied by banjo, mandolin and acoustic guitar, Hillbilly music paved the way for the development of country, bluegrass and western swing.
