Description

A direct descendent of disco, house music developed in underground dance clubs in Chicago and New York during the mid 1980s. Relying more heavily on drum machines, which provided a steady beat that DJs could mix to more easily, early house music blended the melodies of soul and funk with the electronic sounds of synthesizers and samplers. British DJs imported the sounds of Chicago and New York house into England in the late '80s, leading to the development of acid house and the early rave scene. Since then house has branched out in many directions such as deep house, progressive house, French house and hard house, but one feature all these styles share is an insistent 4/4 beat. Important house artists include Masters At Work, Daft Punk, Deep Dish, Todd Terry and Roger Sanchez.
