Description

While their music lacked the glossy studio production of mainstream pop artists, the best indie pop bands of the 1990s crafted memorable, hook-laden tunes and irresistible melodies that rivaled anything else topping the charts at that time. Some artists like the Cardigans and Stereolab worked their way from small, independent labels to the majors, while others like Belle and Sebastian and Eric Matthews preferred to remain with indie labels. Few of these artists achieved major breakthrough radio hits, but most enjoyed considerable critical acclaim for their innovative songwriting talents and fresh approach to pop music.
