As progressive rock and heavy metal continued to push the limits of rock music during the early '70s, pop music artists no longer felt the urge to keep up and returned to a lighter, more innocent sound. "Bubblegum" pop acts like the Partridge Family, the Osmonds and the Jackson 5 sold millions of albums to teen and pre-teen fans who weren't ready for the increasingly harder sounds of rock. But not all pop acts were targeted exclusively towards kids- Elton John was a versatile artist who topped the charts with sophisticated and serious-toned hits. Soft rock and adult contemporary performers like America, Bread, the Carpenters, Neil Diamond and the Eagles appealed to mature audiences as well as young teens and sold millions of albums.
