Emo is short for emotionally expressive punk rock music, although some will argue that the genre's name was lifted from the Austin, Texas nightclub Emo's, which acted as a midwife for the genre by hosting many of emo's finest bands during their rise to fame. Rites of Spring, which formed in Washington D.C. during the mid 1980s and whose members splintered off to form Fugazi, are considered the first emo band, but the genre didn't gain momentum until the mid 1990s when Sunny Day Real Estate made its debut. Musically, emo differed little from hardcore punk rock but the lyrics, which focused on personal matters such as relationships, and the passionately delivered vocals gave it a different spin. Emo's most acclaimed bands include The Get Up Kids and Texas is the Reason.
