Mamie Smith's revolutionary 1920 recording of "Crazy Blues" and "It's Right Here for You" for Okeh Records, the first vocal blues record, sold more than two million copies. Her success not only opened the door for other female blues vocalists, but because the record sold to a primarily African-American audience it also showed the recording industry that these customers were a viable market. Major record labels rushed to release what were known as "race records," ushering in a golden era for female blues singers, including Victoria Spivey, Ida Cox and Lucille Bogan, that lasted through the 1930s.
