In the early 1970s a new style of music that became known as soft rock emerged. Whereas most rock music during the 1960s was aimed at young adults and teenagers, this style of music appealed to a wider audience that spanned several generations. Soft rock artists employed rock production and instruments like electric guitars and keyboards but the sound was more soothing and melodic than the hard, strident tones of rock. Most soft rock artists were solo performers like Barry Manilow, Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond and Billy Joel, but bands like Fleetwood Mac, Bread and America also embraced this sound. Soft rock artists released some of the best-selling albums of the 1970s.
