Songwriter/producer Berry Gordy established the Tamla label in Detroit, Michigan in 1959 to provide opportunities for local R&B artists. In 1961 he started a second label called Motown and scored his first hit with "Please Mr. Postman" by the Marvelettes, which reached Number One on the pop charts. By 1965, Motown/Tamla was America's most successful independent record company, boasting a roster that included dozens of hit-making Detroit artists like Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, the Supremes, the Temptations and the Four Tops. The Motown label's success continued well into the 1970s with the release of hit albums by Diana Ross, the Jackson Five, the Commodores and Stevie Wonder.
