Jazz Of The 80's
77 artists, 947 songs
During the 1980s, many jazz musicians like trumpeter Wynton Marsalis reacted to the excesses of fusion groups such as Weather Report by returning to earlier jazz styles like bebop and hard bop. Guitarist Pat Metheny rose to prominence with several commercially successful post-bop albums. The Rippingtons led a movement towards a lighter, more accessible sound that became known as smooth jazz. This style was adopted by many west coast players like guitarists Larry Carlton and Lee Ritenour. After a long period of illness, Miles Davis made a triumphant comeback by recording several well-received albums that crossed over into the pop charts.
