Well before the Ramones and Sex Pistols learned their first three chords, late-'60s bands like Iggy and the Stooges, the MC5 and the Velvet Underground churned out raw, primal sounds that became the template for punk rock. These artists as well as more glam-oriented acts like David Bowie and Roxy Music displayed a raucous, irreverent attitude that raised a stiff middle finger to increasingly watered-down notions of rock. Experimental sonic iconoclasts like Captain Beefheart, John Cale and Television paved the way for art-punk groups like Public Image Ltd., Gang of Four and Wire, showing that noise and unconventional melodies could be as rebellious as a fast barrage of barre chords through a cranked up amp.
