Influenced more by jump blues, rockabilly and even ska music than traditional big band swing, retro swing developed on the West Coast where it thrived in underground clubs and lounges that previously hosted punk and grunge bands. The Royal Crown Revue was one of the first bands to adopt these nostalgic sounds, and groups like the Brian Setzer Orchestra, Squirrel Nut Zippers and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy scored radio hits that took the movement to its peak in the late '90s. The music and clubs where retro swing bands played celebrated drinking, dancing and romance, which attracted young followers who desired a lively, energetic alternative to the drab, depressive tone of alternative rock and alt-metal.
